"Chepaitis is a national treasure who has yet to be recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, because a category encompassing the gonzo, musically omniverous brilliance, and beatific, introspective sensitivity of the man has yet to be invented." -Kitty Montgomery

Nightmare of the White Elephant

Matisse once remarked that he identified with Buddhism. He said, “I don't know whether I believe in God or not. I think, really, I'm some sort of Buddhist. But the essential thing is to put oneself in a frame of mind which is close to that of prayer.” Queen Māyā of Sakya, the birth mother of Gautama Buddha, dreamed of an encounter with a white elephant, holding a white lotus flower in its trunk. The elephant circled her three times, and entered her womb through her right side, thus choosing Maya as the mother of the Purest One. So Matisse’s nightmare image appears as a blessing of sorts.
