"Chepaitis is a national treasure who has yet to be recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts, because a category encompassing the gonzo, musically omniverous brilliance, and beatific, introspective sensitivity of the man has yet to be invented." -Kitty Montgomery

Surface Tensions/ The Fall of Icarus

Icarus
Surface Tensions/The Fall of Icarus, plate VIII

Matisse’s work doesn’t suggest that Icarus got too close to the sun. Rather, the image suggests Icarus’s attraction to the surface tension of the sea. The figures vulnerability is not in his melting wings but in the exposure of his heart. Matisse is echoing the age-old theme that the accomplishments of an artist are never fully recognized.
